Cross country takes second at home meet
The Colby Community College men's cross country team finished first and the women second as the season opened at the Colby Trojan Invitational Aug. 31 on the CCC campus.
Sophomores led the Colby women as Gaven Murphy finished in 21:17 and teammate Erika Alvarado right behind with a time of 21.20. Sophomore Emily Westeman (21:48), freshman Mya Navarro (22:14), sophomores Allison Hiatt (22:26) and Alane McWilliams (26:04), and freshman Brooke Navarro (27:47) also contributed to a team score of 42.
Hastings College's Heidi Hennings (19:07) was first overall in the women's 5K run as her team won the meet with 17 points. Third place Johnson & Wales University had 59.
On the men's side, eight of the first 11 finishers were Trojans. Sophomore Emmanuel Kipngetich was the overall winner on the 8K course with a time of 15:14. Next came freshman Wesley Banguria (15:54), and sophomores Caleb Carrasco (16:08), Tito Gonzalez (16:38) and Mauro Arancibia-Campos (16:44). Freshmen Ruben Martinez-Fernandez (16:49.27), Arthur Berthelin (16:55), Andres Bella Canet (17:06), Rihards Sergis (17:19) and Geoffrey Torgoy (17:49) also helped Colby total a perfect score of 15.
Second place Hastings College had 55 points and Johnson & Wales University finished with 77.
Both Trojan teams are in action again Saturday in Colorado Springs at the Colorado College Invitational.
