Record-breaking day for track
Three qualify for nationals
The opening meet of 2019 was a productive one for the Colby Community College men's and women's indoor track teams, as the Trojans had three athletes qualify in five events at the indoor Northwest Missouri State University Open meet Jan. 19 in Maryville, Mo.
"Overall, it wasn't too bad of a meet back after a two-month break from racing," said Colby Head Coach Cameron Rieth. "Some of us have some catching up to do, but some are sitting really good, and we are excited to see what they can do."
Aileen Gurrola qualified in the 800m. The sophomore from Garden City finished in 2:24.01.
Wesley Banguria, currently sitting at No. 1 nationally for the 5K, was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association male athlete of the week. His 5K time of 14:52.83 not only won the meet but is also second-best in the CCC record book. Additionally, he surpassed the Colby 3K record with an 8:33.88.
In the same 3K race, sophomore Nehemiah Too set the school record while finishing first by running an 8:26.30. He is ranked first nationally. Too is also ranked No. 2 in the mile after winning in 4:14.60, a mark that is second on the Colby record board.
"Nehemiah and Wesley have begun their assault on our school record book," Rieth said. "It's going to be exciting to see what they can do."
The Trojans are back in action Saturday in Pittsburg for the Pitt State Invitational.
