COLBY, Kan. - The Trojans won a tough battle 49-48 over Bethany College JV at home on Sunday afternoon. After a good start to the game, the Trojans took a step backward on the offensive end and the shots stopped going in. The 49-48 win took a high level of composure and execution for the full 40 minutes.
Bethany JV took a six-point lead and held off the home team for a stretch into the second half-time. The offensive end has been a challenge for the Trojans as the shots just haven't been falling. Today's game saw a much better level of offensive execution, but the shots just didn't fall. A scrappy defense, which is a Coach Spence staple, continued to be solid and kept the Trojans close.
Late in the fourth quarter, the offensive execution paid off and the shots started to fall to take a late lead. Again, Bethany JV knocked down a three and took the lead forcing the Trojans to pick up the defensive pressure and were forced to commit five consecutive fouls to put the visitors in the bonus to shoot free throws. The effort paid off as timely Trojan baskets and a solid defensive effort kept the Trojans in the hunt and they were able to find a way to secure the win.
"I'm so proud of our kids for their effort and composure today," said Coach Spence. "In a game where it could have been easy to allow our frustration to take over, our "WE DO" vision held strong, and we found a way. We will learn a lot from this type of game and will move forward as we continue to grow."
The Trojans return to the home court on Nov. 14 at 5:30 pm CT as they host Southwestern College JV.
