A basket by Nyrobi Pillers with one second left in the game lifted the Colby Community College women's basketball team to a 58-57 win over Laramie County Community College Saturday night at the Community Building.
In a competitive game in which Colby led 19-10 in the first quarter, the Golden Eagles got hot from the perimeter and went on a 15-3 run to go ahead 25-22 midway through the second frame. The margin held, and the Trojans entered the half down 31-28.
Both teams held slim leads in the second half to pave the way for the dramatic finish. Laramie County went up 57-56 on a bucket by Anna Terron with 57 seconds remaining. The Trojans failed to score on the next possession, but the defense held at the other end to get the ball with 14 seconds to go. An interior pass by Alize Ruiz was deflected before Afiya Vincent picked up the ball on the left side of the lane and flipped it to Pillers for the game-winner.
Colby was led in scoring by 17 points from Ruiz. Vincent had 12 rebounds to go with 8 points, and Pillers grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Trojans improve to 6-0 on the season. They are in Colorado this weekend to play in the Lamar Community College Classic before opening Jayhawk Conference play Nov. 27 with Neosho Community College.
