Trojan women end season at Cowley
Scales optimistic about the future
In the opening round of the Region VI playoffs, a valiant second half rally came up short for the 13-seed Colby Community College women's basketball team in a 70-67 loss to fourth seed Cowley County Wednesday in Arkansas City.
Colby put up just five points in the first quarter and trailed at halftime 43-23. Out of the break, however, the Trojans regrouped and outscored the Tigers 44-27 in the second half.
"We had our chances to win," said Colby Head Coach Antwain Scales. "We missed six free throws and had 21 turnovers."
Kaitlyn Guillory capped her sophomore year with a double-double, pouring in 24 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. Freshman Kiara Knight added 15 points.
Cowley had three players in double figures, led by 25 from Kedranea' Addison.
The Trojans conclude the season with an 8-22 record. While eights wins are the most the program has had in five years, first-year coach Antwain Scales believes it is just the beginning of something big.
"My expectations never wavered," he said. "We were in almost every contest, and ultimately I think the growth and culture in our program have turned in a positive direction."
Scales said he already has commitments from several players set to join the Trojans in 2019. Information on the signings will be published at a later date.
