Softball battery earns conference honors
Sims, Valencia KJCCC pitcher, player of the week
The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference recognized Colby Community College softball teammates Abby Sims and Kaycee Valencia for their play in the Trojans' opening week sweep over Lamar Community College. Accolades went to Sims as the pitcher of the week and Valencia as the player of the week.
In her first college start, Sims threw a perfect game, retiring all 15 batters while striking out four as the Trojans blanked the Runnin' Lopes 8-0 in a five-inning run-rule win. The freshman from Syracuse, Utah, also turned in a solid game at the plate with two hits and four RBIs, including her first collegiate home run.
Valencia, a freshman catcher from Herriman, Utah, was the batterymate and called the perfect game thrown by Sims. Offensively, Valencia drove in three runs on two hits.
