Track looks to indoor nationals March 3-4
Several members of the Colby Community College men's and women's indoor track teams qualified for the national meet when they competed Feb. 17-18 at the NJCAA Region VI/KJCCC Championships in Pittsburg.
The women's team finished tenth in the Region VI team standings and fifth in the Jayhawk Conference. Six individuals and the distance medley team qualified for the 2017 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship March 3-4 in Pittsburg.
The distance medley team of Jessenia Ixta (Omaha, Neb.), Brianna Pratt (New Providence, Bahamas), Mackenzie Dill (Pierce, Colo.) and Sharon Kimutai (Eldoret, Kenya) earned a spot at nationals with a seventh place time of 13:11.03.
Winnie Kibet (Eldoret, Kenya) qualified with a second place finish in the 3,000-meter run (10:27.89) and a third place 5,000m time of 18:06.87.
Celeena Holt (Holdrege, Neb.) pole vaulted to a fourth place finish at 10 feet, six inches. To round out regional scoring, the women's 4x400m relay was seventh overall in a season-best time of 4:07.01.
The Trojan men's team concluded the NJCAA Region VI/KJCCC meet with an eighth place finish in the region and sixth in the Jayhawk West. The team saw five individuals, as well as the distance medley team and 4x400m relay team qualify for the national meet in Pittsburg March 3-4.
Individually, Oral "Jerry" Rolle (Nassau, Bahamas) crossed the 400m line in 49.37 to extend his indoor season two more weeks. He also placed fourth in the long jump at 22'9.75".
Other place-winners include: Donovan Storr (Andros, Bahamas), 6th place in the 400m dash (48.46); Ricardo Richardson, (Freeport, Bahamas), 7th in the 600m (1:23.61); Abel Ketema (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia), 5th in the 1,000m (2:36.02) and 4th in the mile run (4:22.68); and Oscar Leyva (Sherman, Texas), 5th in the 3,000m (9:03.40).
The distance medley team consisting of Ketema, Richardson, Mauro Arancibia (Talca, Chile) and Iley Bruce (San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago) were sixth with a time of 10:36.
Storr, Rolle, Richardson and Anthony Bowleg (Freeport, Bahamas) brought home fourth in the 4x400 relay at 3:20.03.
