Historic weekend for Trojan baseball
CCC takes road series from Seward for first time
For the first time in program history, Saturday and Sunday the Colby Community College baseball team won a road series in Liberal by winning three of four games against the Seward County Community College Saints. After dropping the first game 6-4, the Trojans took the next three, 9-6 in 13 innings, 5-4 and 10-4 in 10 innings.
Saturday the Trojans were cruising with a 3-1 lead before the Saints plated two in both the fourth and fifth innings, and another in the sixth. CCC could only add one more and Seward stayed on top for the 6-4 win.
Colby's offense was led by Christian Roduner, who went 2-4 and drove in a pair.
The Trojans overcame three unearned runs in game two and outlasted the Saints 9-6 in 13 innings. Pitcher Greg Leban recorded two outs for the win and Carlos Amador got the save with three outs in the thirteenth.
Roduner, Chris Barttelbort and Joe Lubick each drove in two runs for the Trojans.
The Trojans opened the scoring in game one Sunday with three in the second inning on a triple by Keith Wolverton and a single by Drake Kirkwood. CCC tacked on two more before Seward bats warmed up in a four-run seventh inning on a double by Brian Tims and a home run by Law Greiner. However, the score held as the Trojans won 5-4.
Bryce Fraser threw seven innings and earned the win for Colby, giving up four runs and striking out six.
In game two, Colby took a 4-2 lead into the eighth inning only to watch Seward get two in the bottom half. Neither team scored in the ninth. The Trojans piled up six runs in the tenth, coming on a bases clearing triple off the bat of Brian Granton, and doubles by Harrison Stevens, Andy Leader and Barttelbort. Winning pitcher Carlos Amador (2-2) retired the Saints in the bottom half to retain a 10-4 win.
After picking up a two-out win in Saturday's 13 inning game, Greg Leban started for Colby and got a no-decision. He allowed two runs and six hits over seven innings while striking out four.
The Trojans (19-14, 11-5) have won eight of their last 10 and are now just two games behind first place Dodge City. Saturday and Sunday Colby plays a four-game series in Cheyenne, Wyo. against Miles Community College.
