Another win for Kibet earns national honors
Sophomore named USTFCCCA Female Athlete of the Week
Colby Community College sophomore runner Winnie Kibet added another award to her distinguished career as she was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Female Athlete of the Week. The announcement came after Kibet won her division Saturday at the Oklahoma State Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla.
Racing against a number of athletes from top NJCAA programs, Kibet posted a time of 18:19.2 in a field of 93 women. She crossed the finish line 30 seconds before the runner-up.
Earlier this season Kibet, from El Doret, Kenya, was named the KJCCC Female Athlete of the Week as a result of her win in the Colorado College Invitational on Sept. 9 with a time of 23:01.60. As a freshman in 2016 she was a five-time cross country and track all All-American and was the Region VI Cross Country Female Athlete of the Year.
"Winnie has continued to show exactly what being a Colby Trojan is about," said head coach Cameron Rieth. "She isn't afraid to work hard and makes her weaknesses become her strengths. She has goals in mind and refuses to settle for anything less. We have a long way to go and a lot of work to do, but we are all very proud of her."
The CCC men's and women's teams run again Oct. 7 at the Fort Hays State Tiger Invitational in Hays. Currently, the men are ranked 15th in the USTFCCCA poll, and the women are No. 9.
