Intense Trojans over Hutch
CCC remains undefeated in Jayhawk West
After dropping the first set 21-25 against Jayhawk Conference rival Hutchinson Wednesday night at the Community Building, the Colby Community College volleyball team rebounded to take the next three 25-19, 25-7 and 25-19.
The Trojans improve to 12-1 on the season and remain perfect in five Jayhawk West games. Hutch falls to 4-6 and 3-3 in the conference.
Though CCC held slim leads in the first set, the Blue Dragons gained momentum to pull even at 18 in a contest that had five lead changes and eight ties. Hutch then closed on a 7-3 run to secure the win.
The second set was just as competitive until the game was tied at 16. Then it was the Trojans' turn to take control, as they ended on a 9-3 spurt.
Colby never trailed in the third set and held double-digit leads throughout. The Blue Dragons jumped up 10-6 in the fourth set, but back-to-back kills by Claire Choloux sparked a Trojans 9-2 run, and they never looked back.
Colby's Karleeann Ramos had a double-double with 15 kills and 14 digs. Choloux added nine kills to go with 12 digs. Four Trojans reached double figures in digs, led by 21 from Elaine Thibadeau.
Katelyn Elstun led Hutch offensively with nine kills, and libero Alissa Bautista tallied 22 digs.
CCC resumes play Monday with Barton Community College (9-4, 2-0) in a 6:30 p.m. start at the Colby Community Building.
