Trojans top Hutch
CCC remains undefeated at 13-0
It took five sets, but the Colby Community College volleyball team remained undefeated in 2018 after a gritty Jayhawk Conference battle with the Hutchinson Blue Dragons Wednesday night at the Community Building.
The Trojans won the first two sets 25-20 and 25-23, but dropped sets three and four 22-25 and 17-25. Down 12-9 in the deciding set, Colby regrouped after a timeout and rallied for a 16-14 win.
"We were pleased to see our girls fight back at the end to take the fifth set," said Colby head coach Carey Jones. "We have talked a lot about the fifth set, but this is the first time we've actually been in that situation."
Two Trojans put up double-doubles. Sophomore Julie Archer had 14 digs and 17 kills, three of which came on the final four points of the fifth set. Freshman Alex Merle notched 17 digs and 13 kills. Freshman Kyndal Bacon, the conference setter of the week the last two weeks, contributed 45 assists. Freshman Milica Djukic was solid at the net with five blocks.
According to Jones, the home crowd in the Community Building played a big part in the win.
"The energy and atmosphere in the gym was great, especially during key moments."
CCC improves to an overall record of 13-0 and 4-0 in the Jayhawk Conference. Hutch drops to 4-5 and 3-2.
Even with the best start in her 10 years as a college coach, Jones says it's still early.
"The season is really just getting started, and we need to keep working on making small improvements each time we step on the court."
CCC returns to action Sept. 19 at the Community Building for a 6:30 p.m. start with Barton Community College.
