No. 20 Colby drops Garden City
Wednesday night the Colby Community College volleyball team bounced back from Saturday's defeat against Seward County with a convincing Jayhawk Conference win over Garden City at the Colby Community Building. The Lady Trojans, ranked No. 20 in the NJCAA again this week, took down the Broncbusters in three sets, 25-17, 25-19 and 25-17.
Colby (17-3, 7-1) built an early 6-3 lead in set one. Unforced errors allowed Garden City (3-17, 1-6) to stay within four points throughout, until the lead stretched to 21-16. After a Garden City timeout, the Lady Trojans closed on a 4-1 run.
The second set followed a similar pattern. Three consecutive service aces to start the game helped build an 11-6 lead. The Broncbusters chipped away and closed the gap to 20-19. It would be their last points, as Colby went on a 5-0 burst to win 25-19.
The Lady Trojans carried the momentum into the third set, cruising to a 14-3 lead. When the score reached 18-8, the Broncbusters called timeout and mounted a rally to draw within six, but Colby regrouped and went on to win 25-17.
Colby had a balanced attack. Brennah Gaston and Brynn Niblock each had eight kills, Julie Archer and Kristina Mamic both contributed seven, and Melanie Loiseau added 30 assists. Defensively, Nina Gorgijevska tallied 16 digs and Kristina Mamic had four blocks.
There is a quick turnaround for the Lady Trojans as they play at Dodge City (15-8, 2-5) Friday at 6:30 p.m. Colby's next home action is Oct. 4 for a 6:30 p.m. start with Barton Community College.
