Lady Trojan volleyball tops Cloud
No. 20 CCC moves to 6-0 in the KJCCC
After a slow start in Concordia Wednesday night, the Colby Community College Lady Trojans volleyball team gained enough momentum to beat the Cloud County Thunderbirds in four sets, 17-25, 25-21, 25-19 and 25-15.
Colby trailed throughout the first set. Cloud County (3-14 overall, 0-6 KJCCC) held an early 8-4 lead and stretched it to 22-12 before closing with a 25-17 win.
The Lady Trojans regained their footing in the second set. After the two teams were tied at 14, Colby surged on a 7-3 run and finished on top, 25-21.
Set three was another early struggle. Colby fell behind 6-3 and trailed 17-14 before calling timeout. They regrouped for an 11-2 burst on the way to the 25-19 victory.
The rally continued into the fourth set, as the Lady Trojans built an 11-1 lead and cruised to the 25-15 win.
Twentieth-ranked Colby saw five players reach double figures in digs. Nina Gorgijevska finished with 21, aided by Taylor West (12), Brennah Gaston (10) and Karissa Winkel (10). Melanie Loiseau added 12 to go with 39 assists. Karleeann Ramos led the Lady Trojans with 15 kills while Julie Archer, fifth-best nationally in kills, had 11.
Colby (16-2, 6-0) now looks to a matchup Saturday at the Colby Community Building with No. 9 ranked Seward County (16-1, 5-0). Game time is 2 p.m.
