Bio

Coach Scales is entering his second season at CCC. After accepting the position in May 2018, he brought the Trojans to an 8-22 record in 2018-19. The eight wins equaled the number of wins from 2016 and 2017. After having a full season to recruit, he has high expectations for his 2019 squad.

Scales, born and raised in Wichita, came to Colby Community College after a storied seven-year career at Wichita South High School where he went 152-18. His teams appeared in the Kansas 6A state tournament every year and won four consecutive championships from 2013-16. The fourth title earned him coach of the year honors by the National High School Coaches Association and the National Federation of State High School Associations.

According to Scales, leading a program is not just about winning games. He believes coaches have the chance to impart life lessons that will propel student-athletes to success in the future. The values of respect, accountability, and integrity that form his leadership philosophy are values he hopes to instill in his athletes.

"Although I often use the 'tough love' approach with my players, they all know that I care about their wellbeing and success," he said.

In conjunction with character building, he maintains a laser-focus on ensuring student-athletes are successful in the classroom.

"Without a solid educational foundation," he said, "Our student-athletes will not be successful in the long-term. It is my responsibility as a coach, and the responsibility of the entire staff to appropriately monitor, guide, and support our athletes as they pursue their educational goals."
