KJCCC honors for Gillins, Haegele
Players of the week to begin season
Colby Community College softball teammates Mahealani Haegele and Laynie Gillins were named Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Division I pitcher and player of the week to kick off the season.
Haegele, a sophomore from Richland, Mich., pitched in four games last week. She picked up three wins while scattering eight hits and one earned run over 16.2 innings for a .540 ERA.
Gillins was impressive at the plate over a six-game span as the Trojans won four games. The Mount Pleasant, Utah, freshman hit .619 (13 for 21) with four extra-base hits including two home runs. She did not strike out during the stretch and also scored seven runs.
The Trojans are 5-5 on the season. Pending weather, they are scheduled to host Otero Junior College on Sunday and Northeastern Junior College on Feb. 28 for 2 p.m. starts at Carl Adams Field.
