Streak moves to eight for Lady Trojans
CCC sweeps Barton 9-2, 5-3, to set up Saturday showdown at Butler
The Colby Community College Lady Trojans softball team stretched their win streak to eight Wednesday after coming from behind twice to sweep Barton Community College 9-2 and 5-3 at Carl Adams Softball Field.
Barton's Kat Frakes put the Cougars on top in game one with a first inning two-run blast. It would be their only scoring for the game.
Colby evened the score in the second when Marissa Croft doubled in Katie Adler and Lanessa Amador. Croft also singled home a run in the fifth.
The Lady Trojans, now 19-5 overall and 6-2 in the Jayhawk Conference, pulled away with three more in the sixth on doubles by Katelin Eastman and Amador and a single by Paige Farnsworth.
After giving up two runs in the first inning, CCC pitcher Cassi Clouse settled down and threw a complete game. She surrendered two runs on six hits while striking out two. Her record is now 10-1 with a 1.50 ERA.
In game two, a second-inning double by Emma Horsch gave a 1-0 lead to Barton, (7-11, 4-2).
Colby pulled even in the bottom frame when Katie Adler was caught in a rundown between first and second base, and Farnsworth stole home.
In the third, a throwing error allowed the Cougars to capture a 2-1 lead. It was quickly erased, however. Kaitlynn Withers singled and Alexis Kagan lined a homer to left, putting the Lady Trojans up 3-2.
Barton made it 3-3 on a home run by Hailey Pop in the fifth. CCC again responded in the bottom half with a clutch two-run single by Amador that plated Eastman and Farnsworth.
Mahealani Haegele was the winning pitcher, now 8-1. Over five innings she allowed three runs on seven hits. Whisper Doliwa threw two shutout innings to get the save.
Colby is on the road Saturday in El Dorado for a battle with Butler Community College (17-3, 4-0). The 2016 and 2017 national champions also have an eight-game winning streak on the line. The first pitch of the double header is 2 p.m.
