Second Place for Trojans at Sand Plum
Leyva and Kipngetich place second, third
Running on a rain-soaked course Saturday the Colby Community College women's cross country team took first and the men second at the FHSU Tiger Open hosted at Sand Plum in Victoria.
"It was a great day to be a Trojan," said head coach Cameron Rieth. "With the conditions like they were, we knew times were not going to be the best. With some portions of the course being six inches under water, the course kept getting worse as more races were run on it."
The 17th ranked Trojans had a score of 79 points for the top five runners. Teammates Oscar Leyva (25:50) and Emmanuel Kipngetich (25:51) had a tight finish to earn second and third places. Mauro Arancibia came in 19th with a time of 27:26. Other Colby athletes competing included Austin Russell (27:51), Roberto Silva (27:57), Gibson Weydeveld (28:00), Amilcar "Tito" Gonzalez (28:46), Caleb Carrasco (29:28) and Stephen Lott (31:32).
Rieth is looking forward to what the men will do at the end of the season. "We ran tough, but will have to close that pack time for us do anything as a team. I believe we have the potential to do so."
Both teams have a couple of weeks off from competition to get ready for the NJCAA Region VI Championship in Garden City on Oct. 30.
