National qualifiers at CU Invitational
Banguria, Too, and Gurrola lead the way
The Colby Community College track and field team competed at the University of Colorado on April 6 in Boulder, Colo.
In the men's high jump, Weston Lewis placed 11th with a personal best of 6-5.
The 3000m steeplechase was led by freshman Wesley Banguria, who finished third and a national-qualifying time of 9:40.50. He was followed by an eighth-place finish from freshman Arthur Berthelin in 10:54.43.
In 1500m, the Trojans were led by Caleb Carrasco's national-qualifying time of 4:02.13. He was followed by Nehemiah Too, also qualifying in 4:03.13. Mauro Arancibia finished in 4:15.82, and Emmanuel Kipngetich followed closely behind in 4:23.11. Ruben Martinez ran a season-best 4:32.51, and Rihards Sergis finished in 4:36.03. Ian Baustert and Geoffrey Torgoy rounded out the field with times of 4:36.23 and 5:05.09, respectively.
In the 800m, sophomore Tito Gonzalez ran a 2:02.58.
The 3k was led by a 16th place finish by Austin Russell with a time of 9:28.89. He was followed by teammate Jesse Bebb, who finished 19th at 9:36.50.
The Trojan women also had a national qualifier. Leading the way in the 1500m was sophomore Aileen Gurrola's 5:03.31. She was followed by freshman Brooke Navarro, running a season-best time of 5:20.91. Sophomore Allison Hiatt (5:29.39) and freshman Kayla Minary (5:33.03) also both ran season-bests. Rounding out the field was Hildah Kattam, finishing in 5:52.16.
In the 800m, freshman Emery Swan led the way with a season-best time of 2:27.90. Ascar Koech placed 16th in the 400m with a 1:00.90.
Closing out the meet was the women's 3000m final. The event was led by Erika Alvarado in 19th place and a time of 11:52.13. Mya Navarro (12:27.71) finished with a 24th place performance. Emily Westeman followed closely behind in 26th place and a time of 12:37.67.
Both Trojan teams will compete again April 12-13 in Wichita at the KT Woodman Classic.
