Trojans advance to region quarterfinals
77-70 win forces Sunday showdown with Coffeyville
For the second straight year, the Colby Community College Trojans advanced to the Region VI quarterfinal game after topping Butler Community College 77-70 Wednesday night at the Colby Community Building.
The Trojans got hot near the end of the first half and built a 34-23 lead entering intermission. The second half was more of the same, and CCC appeared to be in control after a steal and emphatic dunk by Eddie Davis widened the lead to 50-30 at the 12.44 mark. However, turnovers that converted into points brought the Grizzlies within striking distance at 71-65 with 2:09 left. That was as close as the game got, as the Trojans sank enough free throws down the stretch to thwart the run.
"I thought we played 35 minutes of good basketball and we were able to hold them off at the end to secure the win," said Colby Head Coach Rusty Grafel, who was grateful for the home court support.
"What a great crowd and atmosphere throughout the entire game. Thank you to everyone that came out!"
Trojans guard Craig Beaudion, who missed the last game with an injured wrist, was back in the lineup Wednesday.
"It was great to see Craig back out there even though he's not 100 percent," Grafel said. "We also had productive minutes out of our bench throughout the game."
Davis tied a career-high with 27 points, and Rian Carter had a double-double that included 15 points and 10 rebounds. At the other end, Moses Bol blocked five shots, and the Trojans had eight steals.
"Defensively, we were sound the entire night and having Moses' presence is huge. We definitely play through him."
The Trojans, now with a record of 18-13, look to Sunday's matchup in Park City with Coffeyville. The Red Ravens (28-2) ended the season ranked third nationally and had a bye in the first round by way of being the second seed in the region tournament.
"We can only focus on one game at a time," Grafel added. "And from here on out every team is on a neutral floor with the same goal in mind of winning a region championship."
Tip-off for Sunday's contest at Hartman Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
