Three in a row as CCC men top Dodge
Four score in double figures
Four players scored in double figures as the Trojan men's basketball team topped Dodge City Community College Saturday night at the Colby Community Building, 81-65. It is the third straight Jayhawk Conference victory for CCC.
"The win was great because we secured our first home conference win," said Colby head coach Rusty Grafel. "The game seemed sluggish at times but we played better in the second half and were able to get a good team win."
The Trojans enjoyed a substantial 23-4 advantage in assists and only had 14 turnovers compared to Dodge City's 28.
Colby held a 32-29 halftime lead. They looked to pull away early in the second half, going up 55-43 at the 13:31 mark. However the Conqs rallied to cut the margin to 60-54 with just over 10 minutes remaining. That would be the closest they got, as the Trojans went on a 21-11 spurt to finish.
Colby, now 3-2 in the Jayhawk and 6-2 overall, was led in scoring by David Hall's 16 points. Gabriel Gyamfi finished with a double-double grabbing 14 rebounds to go with 12 points, Milton Wordlow III added 14 points and six assists, and Xavier Smith had 10 points and four steals.
"It's great to see the guys learn from winning as we still need to be better moving forward," Grafel said.
Dodge City (3-2, 5-3) got 16 points and nine rebounds from Jyrus Freels and 12 points from Hunter Davis.
The Trojans will try to stretch their winning streak to four Wednesday against the nation's pre-season No. 1 team, the Hutchinson Blue Dragons (4-1, 8-1). Game time in Hutchinson is 8 p.m.
