Horsemanship camps announced
Day camps led by equestrian team and coaches begin in May
Four horsemanship day camps hosted by the Colby Community College equestrian team are scheduled this spring. All events will be held at the CCC Agricultural Center located three miles east and one mile north of Colby.
The camps include riding instruction and lectures on topics such as safety, grooming, nutrition, and horse behavior, along with demonstrations and fun events. Additional activities are designed to expose campers to other areas of the equine industry and help participants get to know one another.
Each camp registration and horse check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. Lunch and a camp T-shirt are included with the registration fee.
The first two camps are for riders ages 11 to 17 and include a western show camp on May 29, and a hunt seat show camp on May 30. Campers for both days must have previous riding experience and be able to demonstrate basic skills. The cost is $150 for each camp or $250 to attend both days. The camps end at 4 p.m.
Two other camps are for riders ages 5 to 10 and conclude at 3:30 p.m. each day. The Young Showman Camp on May 31 is for participants who have at least two years of previous show experience. On June 1, the Beginner Day Camp will be held for riders with limited experience. The cost for each campis $100.
"The horsemanship camps are designed to be both an educational and fun experience," said equestrian team coach Shanda Mattix. "Campers are supervised by CCC equestrian coaches and team members."
Participants are encouraged to bring their horses. A limited number of college-owned horses will be available for lease at an additional cost. Campers using their own horses are required to provide a health certificate (within 30 days), valid negative Coggins certificate (within one year), proof of current 4-way/5-way vaccination and proof of current West Nile vaccination. Participants who bring their horses should also provide hay, grain and other supplies.
