Trojans beat champs to advance
Colby downs Hutch; moves on to region championship
The Colby Community College baseball team is peaking at the right time as they rolled through the NJCAA Region VI sub-regional tournament in Hutchinson May 13 through 15. After knocking off the regular season Jayhawk West champion and host Blue Dragons two out of three games, the Trojans advanced to the four-team NJCAA Plains District Championship Thursday in Salina.
In the first game, fifth seed Colby defeated No. 4 Allen Community College 9-4. The Trojans, second nationally with 105 home runs, went deep four times and led 9-0 before the Red Devils plated four in the bottom of the ninth.
Colby and Hutch met the next two games. CCC homered four more times on Friday and overcame a 4-1 early deficit in a 16-5 route.
Saturday's 11-inning finale was much closer. The Trojans jumped out with eight runs in the first frame and held a 10-6 edge after four innings. A four-run sixth pulled the Blue Dragons even before CCC scored two and held on for the win.
Colby, now 29-23 on the season, takes on Butler Community College (35-14) Thursday at Salina's Dean Evans Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.
