Six Trojans selected for all-conference honors
Coutney named Freshman of the Year
Third baseman Matt Coutney was named Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Freshman of the Year in the western division and joined Colby baseball teammates Logan Hofmann and Enok Perez on the All-KJCCC first team. Jason Evans and Josh Diggins made the second team, and Cameron Tilly received honorable mention.
Coutney and Hofmann were also Region VI first team members and Perez was selected to the second team.
"We are extremely happy for these young me to be recognized by the other coaches in the conference for their abilities," said Colby head coach Ryan Carter. "It speaks a lot for the state our program with all of them being freshman and all will be returning next year. It looks like exciting times ahead for Trojan baseball."
Coutney led all hitters in the conference with a .495 average. The third baseman from Alberta, Canada, led the Trojans with 12 home runs and 54 RBIs. He also had a team-high in games played (52), hits (75) and runs (60).
On the mound, Hofmann struck out 63 batters in 54 innings in Jayhawk play. The Saskatchewan, Canada, native went 6-1 while posting a 3.83 earned run average. Overall he had 102 strikeouts, a mark that ranked eightheenth nationally.
Perez hit .378 in the Jayhawk with six home runs while driving in 26. From Bayoman, Puerto Rico, the shortstop was third on the squad with 65 hits and his 14 doubles were the most.
As a center fielder, Diggins was in the leadoff spot and led the Trojans with 198 at-bats. In the conference, he hit .358 with 43 hits. Defensively, the Perth, Australia, native made only three errors in 93 opportunities.
Evans made the most of his 74 conference at-bats. The redshirt catcher and designated hitter from Jonesboro, La., had six home runs and 30 RBIs. He hit .338 and scored 20 runs.
Tilly also had productive conference plate appearances. He had 19 hits in 54 at-bats for a .352 average. Overall, his 10 home runs were tied for second on the team, and the catcher from Canberra, Australia drove in 37.
As a team, Colby finished the season 31-24 and advanced to the Central District Playoffs for the first time since 2013.
