Trojans sweep weekend double-header
CCC downs Seward 7-0, 11-1
Pitching and defense backed the usual offensive display as the Trojans baseball team won 7-0 and 11-1 over Seward County Community College Saturday at Young Memorial Field.
At the end of the day, CCC stood atop the Jayhawk Conference western division with a 9-3 record. They have one eight of their last 10 with an overall record of 15-9.
Saturday against the Saints, the Trojans offense treated game one starting pitcher Ryan Morgan to a 4-0 first inning lead. Two Seward errors and a wild pitch were cashed in on an RBI double by Christian Roduner and a single by Matt Coutney.
Seward County (15-12, 3-5 KJCCC) had their best scoring opportunity in the second when they loaded the bases with no outs. However, Morgan struck out the Saints' Benny Ayala and got Jose Caraballo to hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.
They expanded the lead in the bottom half of the second. After a two-out walk to Josh Diggins, Enok Perez lined a two-run blast to left field, putting Colby up 6-0. A third inning single that plated Andy Leader added the seventh run.
Colby got more solid pitching in the second game behind starter A.J. Yamaguchi and four and a third relief innings from Sam Poliquin, Peyton Ingalls and Jesse Simpson. The bullpen allowed the lone Seward run on a fourth inning home run by Ayala.
Offensively, Colby went up 4-0 in the first inning with the help of three errors and a bases-loaded walk. Jason Evans, Andy Leader, and Jacob Bouzide accounted for RBIs.
Perez hit his second home run of the day to lead off the second to make it 5-0. After a couple of walks and a run-scoring wild pitch, Leader singled home Coutney and Alex Orenczuk to push the lead to 8-0. Single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings capped the Colby scoring.
The Trojans play six non-conference games this week. Tuesday they play at McCook and the two square off again Wednesday in Colby for a 3 p.m. start. Friday and Saturday double-headers are with Indian Hills Community College at Young Memorial Field. The first pitch each day is 1 p.m.
