The Trojan baseball team picked up two key Jayhawk Conference western division wins Saturday with a sweep of Hutchinson Community College, 5-1 and 12-9, at Young Memorial Field. This season Colby has taken three of four games from the Blue Dragons, who were ranked seventh in the NJCAA pre-season poll.
The Trojans jumped on game one Hutchinson starter Miguel Reyes, Jr., with three runs in the first inning. A single by Enok Perez plated two before Matt Coutney doubled him home.
The Blue Dragons got on the board in the third inning when Bobby Morgensen hit a line drive homerun to left field.
The Trojans got the run back in the bottom half when Perez doubled and scored on a single by Jason Evans to make it 4-1. Perez was in the mix again when the Trojans tacked on a run in the fifth. He singled and scored all the way from first on a Coutney single, increasing the lead to 5-1.
Starting pitcher Ryan Morgan kept the Blue Dragons quiet through four and two-thirds innings, scattering a run and four hits while striking out five.
Game two was an offensive explosion for both teams. The Trojans' Andy Leader went 4-for-5 at the plate, homering in the second and sixth innings and driving in four runs. Hutchinson got home runs from Wyatt Divis and Logan Sartori, who had two hits each.
The Blue Dragons grabbed two runs in the first and led 6-2 after four innings. But the Trojans plated six in the fifth inning on RBIs by Coutney, Leader, Jacob Bouzide, and Perez. They would add another in the in the sixth inning to take a 9-6 lead.
Hutchinson's offense again got busy with three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at nine. Colby responded with three in the bottom frame on a bases-clearing double by Alex Orenczuk. The score held for a 12-9 Trojans win.
Colby has a 9-7 overall record and stands at the top of the Jayhawk West with a 3-1 conference record. Hutch drops to 7-6 and 1-3 in the KJCCC.
The Trojans are back in action Thursday for a 1 p.m. home double-header with Pratt.
