Season ends for Trojans at the hands of Fort Scott
Colby falls in game three 11-inning battle
The season came to a close for the Colby Community College baseball team after coming up short in the best of three series with Fort Scott Community College over the weekend at Young Memorial Field. The Trojans fell 5-2 Friday, won a dramatic 9-8 come-from-behind contest Saturday, and lost an 11-inning struggle Sunday, 6-2.
The Trojans battled Friday but could not overcome three Fort Scott home runs in the 5-2 loss. Greyhound shortstop Danny Crews hit a solo homer to break a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning, and Quinn Waterbury added a two-run shot in the ninth. Despite taking the loss, Trojan pitcher Nick Vickers threw seven and two-thirds innings, surrendering three runs, five hits, and striking out 13. Sam Poliquin led the Trojan offense with three hits.
Saturday Fort Scott scored six runs in the first inning and another in the sixth, but Colby got back in the game to trail 7-5 entering the bottom of the ninth. A Brian Granton double plated Keith Wolverton and Andy Leader to tie it at 7. Granton advanced to third on a Christian Roduner single. After Garrett Kirkwood walked, Harrison Stevens delivered a bases loaded single for the game winner, 8-7.
In Sunday's wind-blown deciding game three, the Trojans were down 2-0 before Cole MacLaren singled home Roduner in the third inning to make it 2-1. Leader then scored on a game-tying double by Drake Kirkwood in the sixth. It remained 2-2 until the Greyhounds got four in the eleventh for a 6-2 win.
Colby, the 2016 Jayhawk Conference western division champions, hosted an opening round Region VI playoff series for the second straight year by virtue of their 2017 fourth place conference finish. They end their season with a record of 28-25.
