Jayhawk West Champs split with Garden
CCC goes 2-2 in weekend series at Young Memorial
The Colby Community College baseball team began defense of their 2016 Jayhawk Conference West title by splitting a four-game series with Garden City Community College at Young Memorial Field over the weekend.
In game one on Saturday, a late-inning rally by Colby came up short as Garden held on for a 7-6 win. Sophomore center fielder Garrett Kirkwood went 2-4 with an RBI.
Game two was decided by the same score, but CCC was on the winning side. Right fielder Andy Leader and second baseman Drake Kirkwood each had two hits. Nick Vickers pitched six and a third innings for the win (1-2), striking out five and walking six.
Sunday Garden City jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game one and never looked back. Colby's bats warmed up in the third inning when designated hitter Adam Cook hit his fourth home run, but the Trojans had a hard time scoring in a 10-4 loss.
In game two, three Colby pitchers combined for a 5-0 shutout. First baseman Christian Roduner scored twice and had four hits, including his second home run of the season. Freshman pitcher Greg Leban went five innings for the win, and is now 3-1.
CCC (9-9, 2-2) plays a pair of non-conference games in La Junta, Colo. against Otero Junior College on Tuesday. The Trojans resume conference action Saturday in Hutchinson.
